Reflections of Self
Project type
Outdoor sculpture
Date
Nov 2025
Location
Whangarei, New Zealand
“Reflections of Self” is an evolving light sculpture that explores the relationship between perception, reflection, and form. Its layered, wave-like structure creates a kinetic effect of light and shadow throughout the day, inviting viewers to shift their angle—both physically and metaphorically.
The form gently mirrors its surroundings while refracting light in unexpected directions—echoing the constant interplay between self and environment.
Inspired by Hundertwasser’s ethos of natural asymmetry and sensory immersion, this sculpture reflects both the complexity and simplicity of being. It is meant to be a meditative pause in public space—a moment of stillness, reflection, and curiosity.
The piece celebrates the act of introspection: to stand before it is to witness both one’s outer form and the inner reflections that shape who we are.
Created under Angle Matters by SVAR, it embodies the philosophy that every perspective — every “angle” — reveals a different truth of self.
Acknowledgements
Reflections of Self grew through moments of curiosity, challenge, and grace.
With gratitude to Corianne and Jaco at TAP Lab for their guidance and support, and to Paul Mumby, whose digital design gave form to vision and inspired me to find my own creative voice.
Thanks also to the TAP Lab community and the many artists worldwide whose explorations first sparked this idea.
This piece is as much a reflection of collaboration as it is of self.
